My Triple P Principle

My students at Fullerton College know I ramble on about my 'Rules of 3' and how to use them to their benefit. Let's start the blog with my Persistently Pursue your Passion principle. Nothing new here. Great creative minds throughout history have found this path to success to be true.  The key has always been to plan the short term and long term pursuit paths and always apply a great deal of passion. Let's start at the end here and work backwards. Passion. What do you feel passionate about in your life today? What are you willing to sacrifice time, energy, money, even people for as a creative? And are you moving towards that passion or waiting for it to come to you? If so, it never will. Thoughts?

  1. I took Kelly's class in the 90's and the rules still apply. Create as often as you can, make time to be creative, love the process, find ways to show your work to people, talk about your work intelligently. I have been drawing, painting and creating graphic design for a living for over 15 years. Times can be lean and jobs come and go. But, if you continue to create (even for yourself) and expand your portfolio and knowledge and talk to other creatives and expose your work to others . . . you can succeed. And remember, success isn't always measured by the amount in your bank account.

  2. 2009 is the year of change. Since kelly is a fan of 3's here are my three.
Change your point of view. What can be gained by seeing things from a different vantage point.
Change out of your comfort zone, don't be afraid to make a mistake, try something new or fall down and get dirty, generally you'll learn something new.
Change your underwear...you never know when you'll get caught with your pants down! ;)

  3. I definitely know about being stagnant. I've always said I wanted to make a carreer out of art in some way, but was basically waiting for someone to hand it to me on a silver platter. But I am extremely passionate about my art and sharing it, about creating works be it wet or dry medium and letting other share in it. I know now that in order to be successful at what I love, I need to be willing to take the good with the bad as long as I am moving. Staying where its safe never gets you anywhere. I actually missed work the other day in order to look into getting a job that has something to do with art. So I know sacrifice. I missed out on making money to further advance my art and that lack of funds will probably result in a missed meal...but its totally worth it as long as I am one step closer to where I wanna be.

  4. I guess I've always believed I would be a professional artist without actually BELIEVING it. It was something that was always on the distant horizon while I dealt with whatever crisis was in front of me. Besides, you can't really make a living off of art, right? That's what dayjobs are for, anyway. In the mean time I would do a drawing or project here and there for the fun of it and that would be enough to sustain me.

Time to wake up from that dream. I suppose, in regards to the above scenario, there is something to be said for Persistence in never having given up the dream. Things might actually happen, horizons expand and what-not if I took up the Pursuit end of the deal, huh?

As for Passion: as soon as I decided to wake up, guess what woke up along side me.

  5. O.k., some good info to start. And yes, I will change my underwear, for if ever there was a time to under my triple 'P' principle, Passion would be it.
On to pursue, pursuit, in pursuit of, etc. Some of you are in a position in your life to truly know of pursuit, the 'art' of pursuing something, someone of importance. Within my triple 'P' this is where the need for goals come into play. True pursuit takes a plan, one we are involved in all the time. It is always right there; first item of thought each day, first subject on the tip of our tongues. What aspect of YOUR art are you pursuing today?

  6. In Pursuit of: TIME to DO art

Since I have started taking classes again it has been a clash of two volatile forces: Inspiration vs. Frustration. Mind these are only two classes; Busn Practices and Illustrator CS4 (Hasaan Mamood) I have opened my mind to the possibilities and the ideas just keep coming -I am not just talking assignments either. The Frustration comes with the necessary day-job that eats up all the time I could be using to create. I have no time to satisfactorily complete my assignments -especially those assignments were we need to hit the pavement and talk to the pros out there. Let's not mention the really awesome projects/pieces I have in mind but will not get around to at this pace. This is why I fight everyday with myself whether to stay on the job or take The Leap. Currently it's a paycheck to paycheck existence with the current job so just up and quitting would be financially unsound. How do people find the courage to do this?

  7. Kelly, a great post weather your a creative mind or into anything else, no Passion= no results. The said can be said for sales...though I have seen some misguided passionate sales people in my time.. due to their ability to think.

I like abigails' thoughts.. you must always be looking for better ways to do it faster, better, more creatively etc... even before a down turn starts... start the change now and keep it going all the time.

    GO LEAFS!
